St Patty's Day Banner Sewing Tutorial

My banner is the finishing touch on my mantel.  I had so much fun sewing it.  I am NOT a seamstress, but I can sew a straight line which is exactly what is needed to make the banner.  As long as you have access to a sewing machine and can sew a straight line, you can make one for yourself too!

Materials:

  • Fabric of choice

  • thread

  • ironing board

  • ruler

  • sewing pins

  1. Cut your banner fabric (the long piece that will hang across and hold all of the other pieces.) 2 inches wide by 45 inches {or whatever width your fabric comes in, you can always trim as needed} two times.

  2.  Pin the 2 pieces of fabric together {right sides together}

  3. Sew the 2 pieces of fabric together

  4. Iron open the seam you just made.

  5. Fold the fabric in half and iron it.  Then open it up again for step 6.

  6. Fold one side into the middle {the iron mark you just made in step 5} and iron.

  7. Fold the other side also into the middle and iron.

  8. Fold together again to make the final iron pass.  You will essentially go from a 2 inch wide piece of fabric to a half inch.  We'll call this our binding tape.   Like I said, I'm not a seamstress so I don't know the official names.  :-)

  9. Cut your rectangle pieces out of your favorite fabric.  I cut mine to approximately 5 inches by 10 inches. You will need 2 pieces of fabric for each rectangle.

  10. Pin the right sides together of each rectangle.

  11. Sew them together on 3 sides.  {Sew the 2 long sides and only 1 of the short sides of the rectangle}  Then turn it inside out.

  12. Lay the banner out and make sure the rectangles are evenly spaced using a ruler.

  13. Pin each rectangle into the binding tape and sew one long stitch along the binding tape to hold each rectangle in place.

Now you're done!  You have a beautiful banner you created yourself!!!
